Securing the Future Campaign
Hospice of Laurens County became a victim of the national banking crisis that hit our country in 2009. Funding for the building of the Hospice House was secured through a commercial bank in the form of a bond in 2007. Just two years later, the bank found itself in a much weakened position, and its credit rating was reduced. When this reduction occurred, the holder of the bonds was forced to call the bonds. Hospice had also entered into a complicated swap agreement designed to reduce the volatility of the bonds. A new bank was found to finance our bonds, and the swap agreement had to be bought out. The total cost of this refinancing, including the buy-out, was $500,000. It was covered by a short term loan. Though Hospice is able to meet its commitment with this loan, it does put a strain on our operating accounts. Focused on preserving the strength of Hospice of Laurens County, a steering committee was formed. They have worked diligently to raise funds to alleviate this debt. To date, over $165,000 has been raised in donations and pledges. Every gift is appreciated, regardless of the amount. We have, however, developed the following levels of giving for this campaign and appreciate those who have already made commitments in the following levels:
